The Local Government Act 1999 explicitly provides for the rights of ratepayers.
If you believe your rates are unfair, challenge your council!
Ratepayers can request access to their rates assessment from the local council to see why their rates are set at the current rate.
Ratepayers can also apply (in writing) for a review of their rates. Do not waste your time talking to the council. Written documentation is evidence.
I have heard of Councils putting up their rates to individual properties on legally invalid grounds. They tell ratepayers that they have to put up with it.
No they don’t.
If you apply for a review of your rates and still get nowhere, you can contact the Ombudsman SA to investigate.
